The fear of the Lord is one of the most neglected truths in modern Christianity. We talk about God’s love, His comfort, His nearness — and all of these are true. But Scripture says something startling:
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Not the middle. Not the advanced level. The beginning.
Without the fear of the Lord, everything else collapses.
The Fear of the Lord Is Not Terror — It Is Awe
Many believers avoid this topic because they misunderstand it. The fear of the Lord is not being afraid of God, it is being afraid of being away from Him.
It is awe. It is reverence. It is recognizing that God is holy and we are not. It is honoring Him as the One who holds all authority.
The fear of the Lord is the posture of a heart that knows who God is — and who we are in light of Him.
Why the Modern Church Has Lost Its Fear of God
We live in a culture that treats God casually:
- We speak of Him lightly
- We worship Him flippantly
- We approach Him without reverence
- We reduce Him to a therapist, a life coach, or a buddy
But God is not casual. God is not common. God is not ordinary.
He is holy.
A church that does not fear God will never obey God. A believer who does not fear God will never take sin seriously.
The Fear of the Lord Produces Obedience
Psalm 111:10 says, “All who practice it have good understanding.” Practice — meaning obedience.
The fear of the Lord leads to:
- holiness
- repentance
- wisdom
- discernment
- purity
- spiritual authority
If your faith does not lead you to obey God, you do not fear God.
The Fear of the Lord Draws Us Closer, Not Farther
Psalm 25:14 says, “The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear Him.”
Friendship. Intimacy. Revelation.
These are not given to the casual believer. They are given to the reverent believer.
The fear of the Lord does not push you away — it pulls you in.
A Call to Recover the Fear of the Lord
If the church wants power again, it must recover the fear of the Lord. If believers want clarity again, they must recover the fear of the Lord. If we want revival — true revival — we must recover the fear of the Lord.
The fear of the Lord is not outdated. It is essential.
