One of the most damaging lies in modern Christianity is the idea that holiness is “legalistic.” The moment someone talks about obedience, repentance, or living set apart, the accusation rises: “That sounds like works. That sounds like legalism.”
Scripture never apologizes for calling God’s people to holiness.
Holiness Is God’s Heart for His People
From Genesis to Revelation, God draws a clear line between His people and the world. He calls us to be distinct. Not because He wants to restrict us, but because He wants to reflect His character through us.
1 Peter 1:16 says, “Be holy, for I am holy.” This is not a suggestion. This is not an optional extra. This is the identity of every believer.
Holiness is not about perfection. Holiness is about direction — a life moving toward God, not away from Him.
Legalism and Holiness Are Not the Same
Legalism says: “I obey so God will love me.”
Holiness says: “I obey because God already loves me.”
Legalism is self righteousness. Holiness is Christ likeness.
Legalism is about earning salvation. Holiness is the evidence of salvation.
Legalism produces pride. Holiness produces humility.
The two could not be more different.
Why Holiness Feels Offensive Today
We live in a culture that celebrates self expression, not self denial. A culture that encourages us to follow our hearts, not crucify our flesh. A culture that values acceptance over obedience.
Scripture calls us to holiness, it confronts everything our culture worships.
Holiness requires:
- surrender
- repentance
- discipline
- boundaries
- obedience
- humility
These are not popular words. They are biblical words.
Holiness Is the Fruit of a Transformed Heart
The Holy Spirit lives in you, He produces holiness in you. Not instantly, not perfectly, but genuinely.
Holiness is not behavior modification. Holiness is transformation.
It is the slow, steady work of God shaping your desires, your habits, your thoughts, and your character to reflect His.
Holiness Is Beautiful
Holiness is not harsh. Holiness is not cold. Holiness is not rigid.
Holiness is freedom. Holiness is peace. Holiness is joy. Holiness is clarity. Holiness is protection. Holiness is the life your soul was created for.
Sin destroys. Holiness restores.
Sin enslaves. Holiness frees.
Sin confuses. Holiness clarifies.
A Call to Pursue Holiness Again
Hebrews 12:14 says, “Pursue holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.”
Pursue — meaning chase after, prioritize, make it your aim.
Holiness is not legalism. Holiness is love expressed through obedience.
And the women who pursue holiness will shine in a world that has forgotten what holiness even looks like.
